The European Oncology Nursing Society (EONS) was established in 1984 as a UK registered charity. EONS is comprised of ca 240 individual cancer nurses, 33 national member societies/Inter European Specialist groups and 22 institutions involved in cancer care which in turn represent approximately 22,000 nurses in 33 European countries.
As the largest single representative of cancer nurses in Europe, the European Oncology Nursing Society (EONS) is dedicated to the educational development of nurses who care for cancer patients and their families, and gaining full recognition of cancer nursing as a distinct clinical speciality in each European state.
In pursuit of these goals, EONS is actively engaged in the development of educational programmes such as its Post-Basic Curriculum for Cancer Nursing and another which specifically addresses the needs of elderly cancer patients as a result of unprecedented collaboration between EONS and other expert groups. EONS’ initiatives such as NOEP, TITAN and TARGET have resulted in over 6,000 European nurses being trained in the most current protocols for the management of treatment induced thrombocytopaenia and neutropaenia; the care and management of those receiving targeted therapies for an increasing range of cancers, and the nutritional needs of cancer patients to name but a few.
EONS is also dedicated to the development of a European corpus of cancer nursing knowledge through the initiation and funding of research initiatives which address the specific concerns of cancer nurses and their patients.
The EONS quarterly newsletter provides information about ongoing activities, provides information on activities and projects in the member countries and highlights nursing topics in specific field of oncology.
The Congesses of the European CanCer Organisation (ECCO) are very important educational events for EONS, offering a platform for interaction and professional exchange between cancer nurses from all over the world. The second most important initiative is the EONS Spring Convention.
The 7th EONS Spring Convention will take place in The Hague, The Netherlands, from 15 to 17 April 2010.
