Background: Long term survival after R0 resection in locally advanced gastric cancer (LAGC) remains poor, suggesting that a true curative treatment is seldom performed. Preoperative treatment protocols have been proven to be effective in LAGC by large-scale randomized trials theoretically through an increased control on distant and loco-regional recurrencies. Aim of this study is the evaluation of the effects induced by preoperative chemotherapy and its survival impact on a series of locally advanced gastric carcinomas.

topic: Strategic Early Development Planning and Management to Accelerate Proof of Concept
organizer: NextLevel Pharma
location: Brussels, Belgium
When running early clinical trials for experimental new drugs across a range of therapeutic areas, demonstrating "proof of concept" is a critical milestone of the development process. It is at this stage where exploratory studies become confirmatory studies and there is a basis for studying the efficacy in a larger population. From a business perspective, showing proof of concept is also an essential bargaining chip when negotiating licensing agreements.
Due to the prevalence, diversity and complexity of cancer, oncology clinical trials have evolved along a different path than trials for other therapeutic areas. The toxicity ratings, patient recruitment and stratification, and the ethical aspects all have considerations specific to oncology trials. Despite these differences, oncology drugs face the same industry-wide problem of high attrition rates and low levels of efficiency in clinical trials. The potential therapeutic and commercial value of these drugs need to be determined at an early stage so resources can be allocated more efficiently.

Welcome Note
Dear Colleagues and Friends, it is our great pleasure, on behalf of the German Society for Stem Cell Research (GSZ), to extend you a warm invitation to attend the 5th Annual Conference of the GSZ in Lübeck. The conference will take place at the Campus of the University of Lübeck from 30 September – 2 October, 2010, and will bring together scientists from academia, industry and clinical research to stimulate and promote the exchange of ideas and information about stem cell biology. The meeting will cover a range of current topics of stem cell research including somatic and embryonic stem cells as well as induced pluripotent cells, tissue regeneration, ethical aspects and the biology of tumor stem cells. In particular, we encourage young scientists and students to take part in this meeting since we have arranged large space for poster presentations and short talks. There will be ample opportunities to discuss state of the art approaches and consult with the experts in both, informal discussions and formal panel sessions. Students will pay a very much reduced registration fee, and a discount will also be available to GSZ members. The Conference will take place in the Auditorium Maximum on the University Campus. There will be many opportunities for the participants to join discussion groups and to share interesting findings in stem cell biology studies. To stress the importance of the attendance of young investigators Poster Prices will be awarded. See you in Lübeck!

topic: Senology
organizer: Instituto Valenciano de Oncologia and Spanish Society of Senology
location: Valencia Convention Center, Valencia, Spain
The aim of the Senologic International Society (SIS) – as it is shown in its By - Laws - is to gather the Scientific Societies, Associations and Groups from all over the world that share the common objectives of promoting the knowledge in Biology and Medicine with the purpose of collaboration in prevention, diagnosis, treatment and research of breast diseases. Since 1976, when SIS was founded, it has developed a non-stop activity closely linked to train professionals devoted to these diseases in its benign or malignant presentation.
The Spanish Society of Senology and Breast Disease (SESPM), founded in 1980, has nowadays a membership of nearly one thousand affiliates. It is one of the most active members of SIS and it shares the same objectives. It has a web site and a scientific journal which are its way of expression. Many results from national clinic and basic research are published there. In this sense both Societies develop Training Courses, Symposiums, and Establishment of Consensus for the different specialists that participate in those institutions, and collaborate in different publications about breast health and its pathology.
One of the most significant activities is the performance of Congresses, where the newest information and the last advances in Senology, are presented in a multidisciplinary approach.
SIS (www.sisbreast.org) has performed Congresses in Shangai, Zagreb, Houston, Boston and other important cities of the world, and SESPM (www.sespm.es) in different Spanish cities during the last thirty years. Next Congress will be held in October 20th – 22nd, in Valencia, Spain. It will gather both Societies, offering a big opportunity for acquisition and updating the last scientific advances in Senology. More than one thousand five hundred attendants are expected. The Preliminary Scientific Congress Program is attached for your information.

topic: Complication in colorectal surgery, colorectal liver metastases
organizer: Kantonsspital St.Gallen, Department of Surgery
location: St.Gallen, Switzerland, Olma Messen Hall 2&3
Dear colleagues, It is my pleasure inviting you to join us at the European Colorectal Congress 2010. The main topics this year are:
COMPLICATIONS LIVER METASTASES
Since no one likes to admit having complications after surgery, they are rarely discussed at a congress. Thus, we decided to focus this year’s congress particularly on the topic of complications: what are the causes, how can we treat them and how can we prevent them. We are looking for the best free paper in the fields “Colorectal surgery” or "Liver metastases". To encourage the participation of young professionals, we continue offering a reduced participation fee for fellows in training. Furthermore we will offer two workshops on 30th November 2010 and during the congress. The workshops cover proctological topics and again NOTES & Single Port Surgery. The programme of the workshops includes live surgery (simulcast to the auditorium), discussion as well as hands-on training.
I’m looking forward to meeting you in St.Gallen at the European Colorectal Congress 2010! Sincerely, Prof. Dr. Jochen Lange Head of Department of Surgery

topic: Skin cancer of the head and neck
organizer: The Netherlands Cancer Institute
location: Amsterdam
Skin cancers are the most common malignancies occurring in the Caucasian population. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) represents 75%, squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) 20% and melanoma 5% of all skin cancers. Over the last decade a significant increase of skin cancer incidence has been noted and it is predicted that skin cancer rates will continue to rise for the forthcoming decades. Despite the fact that the highest incidence of skin cancer is found in the head and neck, timely recognition of the malignant state of the disease and appropriate diagnosis making is often delayed and contributes to a considerable amount of late referrals to cancer clinics. The adequate diagnosis and treatment of head and neck skin cancer is strongly dependent on a multidisciplinary approach with active participation of various medical specialists.
