Elective Course in Oncology for Medical Students

Following the success of the previous editions, ECCO - the European CanCer Organisation is organising the 5th Elective Course in Oncology for Medical Students in the spectacular city of Poznan from 10 - 21 August 2009.

 

With the key goal of stimulating medical students to specialise in an oncology related discipline, this intensive course has proven highly successful as reflected by the positive and enthusiastic feedback received from former students.


For two weeks, 24 students from every corner of Europe convene at the University of Medical Sciences, Poznan, Poland, to receive theoretical and practical training from experienced teachers. The programme incorporates plenary sessions, case studies presentations, special visits to various oncology departments and group course projects that must be finalised and presented at the end of the course.


Participation is per competitive application. Successful candidates benefit from free registration and accommodation at a fellow student’s home as well as a travel grant.

Course Objectives toparrow

  • To provide insight into all aspects of oncology with both theoretical and practical sessions
  • To facilitate a multidisciplinary approach to cancer treatment
  • To give a presentation on a specific and defined topic

Eligibility toparrow

  • The course is offered to medical students from their fourth year of studies onwards from any European country
  • Applicants must have clinical experience
  • A maximum of twenty four students will be selected

Course Format toparrow

  • Ten working days
  • The programme covers all aspects of oncology
  • Theoretical plenary sessions of a maximum 2 hours every day
  • Case presentations
  • Two-hour practical sessions in small groups every day (labs, ward visits, etc)  
  • Preparation in small working groups of a presentation on a specific topic under the supervision of a teacher. The last day will be devoted to the project presentations delivered by the students (compulsory)
  • Students are invited to bring their laptops to the course
  • The official language is English - students must be fluent in English

Timetable toparrow

Participants should arrive on Sunday 9th August 2009 in the afternoon. A welcome reception will be organised by the host institute in the evening.

 

The course will commence on Monday 10th at 08.30 and ends on Friday 21th at 17.15. A farewell party will follow. All students are required to stay up until the end of the course.

 

A visit to the city of Poznan is scheduled during the first week of the course.

 

Registration, Accommodation and Travel toparrow

Students will be offered free registration, free accommodation in a students’ home and a public transport pass for the duration of the course.  Breakfast and lunch will be included, although students will have to cover the cost of dinners and any personal expenses.

 

Travel costs will be reimbursed up to a maximum of 500 €.

 

Students are required to provide a copy of their travel tickets to receive reimbursement.
